About Bulbs of Fire
Bart and Simone Nagel immigrated to Canada from Holland in 2006. Their initial thoughts were that they would be settling near the city of Woodstock, but instead they were drawn to the shores of Georgian Bay where the ended up buying their homestead in Tiny Township Ontario. Bart and Simone were in search of a simpler life where they could feel more connected to the land and to the seasons. They wanted a large vegetable garden where they could produce enough food to feed their family. A small area of this garden was reserved for garlic. As Bart is quite passionate about garlic, he did a lot of research to ensure the chosen varieties for his tiny plot would be just perfect for him. He favoured the spicier types, the one's with bold flavour that give a little heat to the palate. Over time, people started to get a sense of Barts indepth knowledge of garlic and started to ask questions. They were keen to learn and taste the difference between the varieties. This lead to them wanting to buy into Barts personal garlic stock. Soon Bart and Simone had to expand their garden area to plant more garlic.
The rest, as they say, is history, and a garlic business was formed. Simone and Bart called their company Bulbs of Fire after Barts love for the varieties with a bold spicy heat. Knowing heat isn't for everyone, they also grow a strain of garlic called Music, that offers a calmer, full garlic flavour profile.
The business first big step came in 2011 when they decided to plant a few thousand cloves as a test to see how big their market really could be. They quickly found out that they grossly underestimated the market potential and are now farming over 35 varieties. The garlic preserves were introduced a couple of years ago to some pretty incredible reviews. Who knew garlic married so well with so many things?!
You can still visit the farm to purchase your garlic or you can find Bulbs of Fire seasonally at their local Farmers Markets (Lake Rosseau, Orillia, Gravenhurst and Midland).
